I harvested my first Tom (21 lbs, 8lbs of meat, 10.5” beard, 1” spurs) with this call and have had several close encounters including one where I called a turkey over rough terrain from almost 200 yards out only for a hawk to take out my decoy when it was closing in about 50 yards behind me.
I’m certainly still making mistakes, but I’ve gotten a bunch of gobbles and Toms coming closer with this one. For some reason I find it easier to use for clucks and cuts, and I’m more consistent with it than the several other Phelps diaphragms I’ve tried. I can even get some good purrs with it. Until I develop my techniques on other calls, this one is my go to.
The Tom I harvested came on my flank and then behind me by about 80 yards. I hunt private land so I was able to do a 70 yard stalk walking around a forsythia bush talking back and forth with it before settling in a trench and taking it at 15 yards. I used a mix of yelps, clucks, and cuts, though I don’t know that it was my calling ability that closed the deal. The call sounded great, loud, and raspy. I’m getting a few more.
